Two not-too-tall travelers tales

Pulaski and the Great Switcheroo

Pulaski was hitchhiking but mostly hiking
walking and walking some more, stalking the end
of another endless highway
in the parched desert of his particular dreams

He found someone doing the same damn thing
more or less but in the opposite direction
They met for some damn reason on the island
between lanes & the other feller fired one up

Oh brother oh brother let me tell you
another tall one not too accurately true
It’s fine & dandy finding ye in the middle of nowhere
wind blasting, sun growing long our kinky knotty hair.

Two lonesome wanderers of the wasteland
they departed each others company
high & happy, each heading back the way he came
their goals receding behind them in the great switcheroo…

Pulaski at the Mission

With a bad knee
Pulaski holed up
at the mission as the full-time janitor

When I came thru with
my bedroll
he advised me where
I should not lay it down outside

Not because of
hooligans
but
because of cops

So I stayed
at
the
mission

Pulaski trained me to be
the mission’s next full-time janitor
but it never happened

After he left to
camp on the river
I ended up a janitor
only on weekends

I blog now
on public library computers
on week days except Monday when
the library is closed

I remember Pulaski
bringing me coffee in the early morning
on the chapel floor
I was barely awake

He
didn’t
have to
do that

But I’m
sure
glad
he did.
